Agrofest seminar to focus on livestock

KUCHING: An Agrofest seminar to be held in conjunction with this year’s State Farmers’ Day will focus on the livestock sector and its business potential.

The seminar on Nov 2 will provide an overview on the development and potential of the state’s livestock sector.

Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam), which is organising the seminar jointly with the State Modernisation of Agriculture Ministry, said its focus was timely as the livestock sector had been identified as one of 10 priority industries to be developed under the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy.

Sarawak to host CJA eighth meet from Oct 13

KUCHING: The Commonwealth Journalists Association’s (CJA) local chapter, in collaboration with Angkatan Zaman Mansang, will host the CJA’s triennial delegates’ conference here from October 13 to 18.

CJA branch chairman Florence Yii said about 80 delegates comprising 40 foreign journalists, their Malaysian counterparts and observers are expected to attend the conference themed News Targets for Today: Better Democracy and a Better Environment.

“I am confident this eighth conference will provide tremendous exposure and networking opportunities for local media practitioners and journalists from Commonwealth nations.

“It is the first time such a conference is being held in the country and SouthEast Asia. It coincides with Sarawak’s 45th anniversary within Malaysia,” she said.

Foster love of reading early, says asst minister

“From stirring children’s interest and teaching them to read to providing reading materials and good role models, there must be a whole chain of activity if we are to create a reading society,” Fatimah said at the launch of two books jointly published by Sarawak NGO Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) and Petronas at the State Library here.

The books, Shaping a Culture of Thinkers and Sparkles of Growing Minds, are compilations of winning entries in the Azam-Petronas best development feature awards and short story writing competition in 2001, 2002 and 2004.

Azam chief executive Datuk Aloysius Dris said the competition aimed to cultivate interest in reading and writing stories about Sarawak.

Teaching the masses about Conservation

KUCHING: Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) is spearheading the education for sustainable de-velopment programme under the patronage of Unesco.

Azam’s chief executive officer Datuk Aloysius Dris said the non-governmental organisation was engaging the country’s media in the programme through workshops and brainstorming sessions.

Clean development mechanism conference in Kuching

KUCHING: The Sarawak Development Institute (SDI) is organising a conference on clean development mechanism at Crowne Plaza Riverside Hotel, Kuching, Jan 24-25.

Speakers include Dr Nadzri Yahaya from the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry, Dr Norini Haron from Forest Research Institute Malaysia and Eco-Ideal Consulting Sdn Bhd executive director Soon Hun Yang.

Honour for Sarawak NGO

KUCHING: Sarawak NGO Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) will participate for the first time in a women’s leadership programme at the East-West Centre in Honolulu, Hawaii, this month.

Azam will be represented by its senior manager of community development, Dora Jok, who will join participants from Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Pakistan, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam and the United States.

New category in Azam contest

The annual best development feature and short story writing competition organised by Sarawak non-governmental organisation Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) will see the introduction of the best development picture category this year.

Azam deputy chairman Datuk Wilson Baya Dandot said that entries in the category should be photographs depicting development in Sarawak.

Handicraft workshop for women in longhouse

KUCHING: The womenfolk in Long Bemang, Sarawak’s longest Kayan longhouse with 200 households in Baram, will be invited to attend a workshop on handicraft development.

A Miri-based voluntary handicraft organisation will share with them its success story during the workshop at the longhouse tomorrow.

Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam), a non-governmental organisation, had organised a workshop on “Building Capacity in Voluntarism Among Rural Women” at the longhouse settlement last year.

CJA and AZAM to help train Sarawak journalists

KUCHING: The Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) and state-funded Angkatan Zaman Mansang (Azam) will conduct journalism training programmes in the state.

The CJA has worked with the Kuching Division Journalists’ Association (KDJA) since the 1980s by providing speakers and facilitators for journalism training courses for local reporters.

The collaboration was later extended, with Azam coming in to fund the courses.
